In the early 1800s there was only one type of soap that cleaned everything - people, clothes, the dog... But soon, the Victorians were getting themselves in a lather about ‘cleanliness’ being ‘next to godliness’ and any lack of personal hygiene was seen as a sure sign of grubby morals.
